Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
