We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
